About Isonokami Shrine

Isonokami Shrine, located in Tenri City, Nara Prefecture, is one of Japan’s oldest shrines. It is an ancient shrine mentioned in the *Nihon Shoki* (Chronicles of Japan) and has been revered as the tutelary deity of the Mononobe clan.

The shrine grounds, enveloped in a deep forest, are filled with a sacred atmosphere. It is said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Jimmu, and boasts a status comparable to that of Ise Grand Shrine.

Deities and History

The main deity is Futsu-no-Mitama-no-Okami, the divine spirit residing in the sacred sword used during Emperor Jimmu’s eastern expedition. This sword is said to have been presented to the Emperor by Nigihayahi-no-Mikoto, the ancestral deity of the Mononobe clan.

In ancient times, it also served as an armory, an important place for managing the weapons of the imperial court.

Points to Note During Your Visit

National Treasure: The Seven-Branched Sword (Shichishito)

The greatest treasure of Isonokami Shrine is the Seven-Branched Sword. This iron sword, believed to have been presented from Baekje in the late 4th century, is designated a National Treasure. It is characterized by its unique shape, with six branches extending from the blade.

Currently, it is kept under strict security as a treasure and is usually not open to the public, but it may be displayed during special exhibitions.

Sacred Chickens (Shinkei)

The chickens that roam freely within the shrine grounds are also a famous feature of Isonokami Shrine. They are cherished as messengers of the gods and warmly welcome visitors.

Chickens are considered sacred because, according to legend, they announced the dawn with their crowing when Amaterasu Omikami hid in the Heavenly Rock Cave.

Worship Hall and Main Shrine

The Worship Hall, designated a National Treasure, is an elegant building constructed during the Kamakura period. The cypress bark roof and vermilion-painted pillars harmonize beautifully.

The main shrine did not exist until the Meiji era; the sacred sword was buried in the “Furutakaniwa” area, which was a restricted area. The current main shrine was built in 1874 (Meiji 7).

Subsidiary Shrine: Izumo Takeo Shrine

The subsidiary shrine within the grounds, Izumo Takeo Shrine, is also a National Treasure. It enshrines the fierce spirit of the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi sword and preserves the architectural style of the Kamakura period.
