About Murō Ryūketsu Shrine

Murō Ryūketsu Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Murō, Uda City, Nara Prefecture. It boasts a history of over 1,000 years, with its founding said to date back to the Asuka period. Situated approximately 700 meters west of Murō-ji Temple, it welcomes visitors with a tranquil atmosphere enveloped in a deep forest.

The Legend of the Dragon God and the Dragon Cave

The shrine’s most distinctive feature is the cave known as “Ryūketsu” (Dragon Cave), located about a 15-minute climb up the mountain path from the main hall. This cave, approximately 15 meters high and 38 meters deep, has been believed since ancient times to be the dwelling place of the dragon god. Records from the Heian period show that the imperial court dispatched an imperial envoy to pray for rain during droughts, and it was a highly prestigious sacred site for rain prayers, even mentioned in the Engishiki (a historical document).
