About Tokyo Daijingu Shrine

Tokyo Daijingu Shrine, founded in 1880 (Meiji 13), is affectionately known as “Tokyo’s Ise Shrine.” Built as a place of worship for Ise Grand Shrine, it enshrines the deities of both the Inner and Outer Shrines of Ise Grand Shrine, and is believed to offer the same blessings as Ise Grand Shrine while in Tokyo.

Despite its convenient location in the heart of Tokyo, within walking distance of Iidabashi Station, it maintains a tranquil atmosphere and is particularly known for its blessings related to matchmaking, making it a popular power spot visited by many worshippers throughout the year, especially young women.

History and Origins

Founding History

Tokyo Daijingu Shrine was founded by the Meiji government as a place of worship for Ise Grand Shrine in Tokyo, with the aim of widely promoting pilgrimages to Ise Grand Shrine among the public. Initially located in Hibiya, it was moved to its current location in Iidabashi in 1928 (Showa 3) after the Great Kanto Earthquake.

The Birthplace of Shinto Wedding Ceremonies

Tokyo Daijingu Shrine is known as the first shrine in Japan to perform Shinto wedding ceremonies. Founded in 1900 (Meiji 33) to commemorate the marriage of the then Crown Prince (later Emperor Taisho), it allowed private individuals to perform Shinto wedding ceremonies. This historical background is one of the reasons why it attracts worshippers as a shrine for matchmaking.
