About the Misen Observatory

Misen is a sacred mountain with an elevation of 535m, towering over Miyajima Island in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The Misen Observatory, located near its summit, is a spectacular spot offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the beautiful archipelago of the Seto Inland Sea. It has long been an object of mountain worship and is a sacred site said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi (Kukai).

In 1996, along with Itsukushima Shrine, it was registered as a component of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. As a special place where the rich natural environment of primeval forests and the history of faith merge, it attracts many worshippers and hikers from both Japan and abroad.

History and Faith of Misen

Misen is said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi in 806 (Daido 1) and flourished as a place of practice for Shingon Esoteric Buddhism. Within the mountains, numerous temples and shrines are scattered, including the Reikado (Spiritual Fire Hall), where the “eternal sacred flame” has burned for over 1200 years, as well as the Misen Main Hall and the Sankido (Three Demon Hall). It remains a revered sacred site for Shugendo (mountain asceticism).

It is said that Ito Hirobumi, Japan’s first Prime Minister, praised the view from Mount Misen, stating, “The true value of one of Japan’s three most scenic views lies in the view from the summit of Mount Misen.
