About Utasu Shrine

Utasu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Higashiyama, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It is adjacent to Higashi Chaya District, one of Kanazawa’s three major geisha districts, and situated at the foot of Mount Utatsu.

History and Origins

Founded in 718 AD (Yoro 2), it is an ancient shrine with a history of over 1300 years. Originally called “Utatsu Hachimangu,” it was renamed “Utasu Shrine” during the Meiji era due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism.

During the Edo period, it received the patronage of the Maeda family of the Kaga Domain and was revered as the guardian deity of the Mount Utatsu area. It was particularly devoted to the geishas of Higashi Chaya District, and even today, worshippers continue to visit, praying for improvement in their artistic skills and business prosperity.
