Complete Guide to Hiratsuka Hachimangu Shrine | The Charm and Blessings of Sagami Province’s Only Shrine with a 1600-Year History
Hiratsuka Hachimangu Shrine, located in Asama-cho, Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a venerable shrine with a history of approximately 1600 years. Formerly known as “Tsurumineyama Hachimangu Shrine,” it has been revered by the local people as the “Guardian Deity of the Land” as the only Hachimangu shrine in Sagami Province. As a representative shrine of the Shonan area, it attracts many worshippers seeking prayers for protection from misfortune, safe childbirth, and Shichi-Go-San (a traditional Japanese rite of passage for children).
History and Origins of Hiratsuka Hachimangu Shrine
Origin of its Founding and the Will of Emperor Nintoku
The founding of Hiratsuka Hachimangu Shrine dates back approximately 1600 years to the 68th year of Emperor Nintoku’s reign (around 380 AD). At that time, a major earthquake struck the Kanto region, including Sagami Province, causing great suffering to many people. Deeply concerned by this tragic situation, Emperor Nintoku, the 16th emperor, decided to enshrine the spirit of Emperor Ojin, the 15th emperor, in this place to pray for the peace and security of the land and its people.
This founding is not merely the construction of a shrine, but a historical event in which the emperor himself was deeply saddened by the suffering of his people and prayed for recovery from disaster and for peace, and it has been passed down to the present day.
From Tsurumineyama Hachimangu to Hiratsuka Hachimangu
Hiratsuka Hachimangu was originally called “Tsurumineyama Hachimangu.” This name originates from the fact that the shrine grounds were once located on a small hill, known as a beautiful mountain where cranes would descend. Over time, with the development of the region, the current name “Hiratsuka Hachimangu” became established.
The Status of the Only Shrine in Sagami Province
Hiratsuka Hachimangu holds a special status as the “only Hachimangu shrine in Sagami Province.” This signifies that it is the only Hachiman shrine representing the entire Sagami Province, and has functioned as a spiritual center of the region since ancient times. This status speaks to the deep reverence it has received from successive emperors and samurai families.
