About Shigisan Chogosonshi-ji Temple

Shigisan Chogosonshi-ji Temple is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple located on the slopes of Mt. Shigi in Heguri-cho, Ikoma-gun, Nara Prefecture. Its official name is “Shigisan Shingon Sect Head Temple Chogosonshi-ji.” It is said to have been founded after Prince Shotoku prayed to Bishamonten (Vaisravana) for victory in a battle against Mononobe no Moriya.

The giant papier-mâché tiger, approximately 6 meters tall, that greets visitors at the temple entrance is nationally famous as a symbol of the temple.

Points to Note During Your Visit

Papier-mâché Tiger

The giant papier-mâché tiger that sits at the temple entrance is considered a messenger of Bishamonten. Originating from the legend that Bishamonten appeared before Prince Shotoku on the Year, Day, and Hour of the Tiger, it is worshipped as a symbol of good fortune, wealth, and business prosperity. Visitors can enter the tiger’s mouth, making it a popular photo spot.

Main Hall (Bishamonten-o-do)

The main hall, which enshrines the principal deity Bishamonten, is the center of Shigi-san faith. It is counted as one of Japan’s three great Bishamonten temples and is known for its blessings of victory, wealth, and good fortune. A special ceremony is held on the 3rd of every month.

Kaidan Meguri (Circumambulation of the Underground Corridor)

Below the main hall is the “Kaidan Meguri,” a circumambulation of a completely dark corridor. It is a precious experience where one is said to forge a connection with Buddha by feeling their way through the darkness and touching the “lock” in the center.

Sorabachido Hall

This hall is named after the legend that Bishamonten appeared riding in a flying bowl. Built in a stage-like style, it offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Yamato Plain below.

Senjuin Temple

A sub-temple that can be used as a temple lodging. Guests can enjoy vegetarian cuisine while staying overnight and participate in morning prayers.
