About Hitachi-no-Kuni Izumo Taisha Shrine

Hitachi-no-Kuni Izumo Taisha Shrine is a Shinto shrine located on a hill in the Fukuhara district of Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture. It was founded in 1992 (Heisei 4) by inviting a divided spirit of Okuninushi-no-Okami from Izumo Taisha Shrine in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture.

Deity and Divine Virtues

The enshrined deity is Okuninushi-no-Okami. Affectionately known as “Daikoku-sama,” he is widely worshipped as the god of nation-building, agriculture, commerce, and matchmaking.

Within the shrine grounds stands a wooden statue of Okuninushi-no-Okami, approximately 1.8 meters tall. Its gentle expression and presence captivate visitors. This statue is modeled after the statue at the main Izumo Taisha Shrine, and many visitors seeking blessings for matchmaking offer their prayers here.

Highlights

Japan’s Largest Shimenawa (Sacred Rope)

The most striking feature of Hitachi Province Izumo Taisha Shrine is its 16-meter-long, 6-ton shimenawa (sacred rope) hanging above the worship hall. It boasts the second largest scale after the Kagura-den (sacred dance hall) at the main Izumo Taisha shrine in Shimane Prefecture, and its imposing presence is truly awe-inspiring. It is meticulously woven by craftsmen using rice straw sourced from the Izumo region.

Standing beneath the shimenawa, you are enveloped in its immense size and sacred atmosphere, offering a truly special experience. It’s also a popular photo spot and a hot topic on social media.

Worship Hall and Main Shrine

The worship hall is a magnificent structure incorporating the same “Taisha-zukuri” style as the main Izumo Taisha shrine. The grounds, filled with the scent of cypress wood, are refreshing and enveloped in a tranquil atmosphere that cleanses the soul.

Points to Note When Visiting

Proper Worship Etiquette

At Hitachi-no-kuni Izumo Taisha, worship is conducted using the same “two bows, four claps, one bow” method as at the main Izumo Taisha shrine. This differs from the typical “two bows, two claps, one bow” method used at most shrines, so please be aware of this.

  1. Bow deeply twice
  2. Clap your hands four times
  3. Bow deeply once at the end

There is an instruction board explaining the proper etiquette in front of the main hall, so even first-time visitors can worship with ease.

Recommended Visiting Times

Early mornings and weekday mornings are less crowded, allowing for a peaceful visit. Especially during the time when the morning sun shines, the sacred ropes glow golden, enhancing the mystical atmosphere. Weekends and holidays are bustling with worshippers praying for matchmaking, but this lively atmosphere is also enjoyable.
