About Katsuoji Temple
Ochozan Katsuoji Temple is a Tendai sect temple located in Minoh City, Osaka Prefecture. Founded in 727 AD during the Nara period, it is known as an ancient temple with nearly 1300 years of history. It has long been revered as a “temple of victory,” and has been a sacred site visited by successive warlords, including the Minamoto and Ashikaga clans, to pray for victory in battle.
Origin of the Temple Name
During the Heian period, after prayers for the recovery of Emperor Seiwa from illness were successfully answered, the temple was given the name “Katsuoji” (勝王寺). However, it is said that the name was changed to “Katsuoji” (勝尾寺) because the meaning of “victory over the king” was considered too presumptuous. As this anecdote shows, it has been believed since ancient times to bring good fortune in victory.
Points to Note During Your Visit
Victory Daruma Dolls
The most distinctive feature of the temple grounds is the thousands of red Daruma dolls dedicated throughout the temple. Daruma dolls of various sizes line the main hall, the pagoda, the area around the pond, and the stone steps, creating a unique landscape. Visitors offer a Daruma doll with a wish, and it is customary to paint in the eyes and offer it again once the wish is granted.
