About Otori Taisha Shrine

Otori Taisha Shrine is a Shikinaisha (a shrine listed in the Engishiki, an ancient Japanese legal code) located in Otori-kita-cho, Nishi-ku, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. It is the head shrine of approximately 60 Otori Shrines and Washijinja Shrines throughout Japan. The main deity enshrined is Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, and it has been revered since ancient times as the Ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of Izumi Province.

History and Origin

Its founding is said to date back to the age of the gods, and it is an ancient shrine mentioned in the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan). It is believed to have originated from the enshrinement of the spirit of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, who died in this area on his return from his eastern expedition and transformed into a white swan before flying away. It is listed as “Otori Shrine, Otori District, Izumi Province” in the Engishiki Jinmyocho (a list of shrines compiled in the Heian period), indicating its importance to the imperial court.

Highlights of the Shrine Grounds

Wooden Torii Gate

The large wooden torii gate standing at the entrance to the approach to the shrine was rebuilt in modern times, but it retains the traditional Shinmei-torii style. The majestic presence, harmoniously blended with the surrounding forest, welcomes visitors.

Main Hall and Worship Hall

The main hall is built in a unique architectural style called Otori-zukuri, preserving the ancient architectural style of gable roofs and flat entrances. Both the main hall and the worship hall are designated cultural properties of Sakai City and are historically significant.

Grounds Surrounded by Forest

The approximately 10,000-tsubo (approx. 33,000 square meters) grounds are surrounded by a sacred forest, maintaining a tranquil atmosphere despite being in an urban area. Giant trees such as camphor and chinquapin flourish, and the sounds of wild birds fill the air, creating a rich natural environment.
