About Goryo Shrine
Goryo Shrine is a shrine boasting a rich history and tradition, established in the 9th century. The shrine grounds offer beautiful natural scenery throughout the seasons, and are particularly bustling with visitors during the cherry blossom season in spring. It has long been a center of local faith, and various festivals and events are held throughout the year.
History and Origins
Background of Founding
Founded in the 9th century (early Heian period), Goryo Shrine was established to appease vengeful spirits and protect people from epidemics and disasters. The Goryo faith spread amidst the political turmoil of Heian-kyo (Kyoto), and became established as a faith that prayed for social stability by enshrining the spirits of nobles and imperial family members who met untimely deaths.
Historical Changes
From the medieval to the early modern period, it attracted the faith of samurai and commoners, and the shrine grounds were rebuilt and expanded several times. During the Edo period, it was revered as the local tutelary deity, and many of the current shrine buildings were constructed during this period.
Points to Note When Visiting
Main Shrine and Worship Hall
The main shrine is built in the traditional style of Shinto shrine architecture, and the craftsmanship of the artisans of the time shines through in the detailed carvings and decorations. At the worship hall, offer your prayers with sincerity using the formal worship procedure of “two bows, two claps, and one bow.”
Subsidiary Shrines and Auxiliary Shrines
Several subsidiary shrines are scattered around the main shrine. Each enshrines a different deity and is believed to offer various blessings, such as academic success, business prosperity, and matchmaking. If you have time, we recommend visiting each shrine.
Sacred Tree and Nature
There is a sacred tree on the grounds, said to be several hundred years old, creating a sacred atmosphere. In spring, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and the sight of the entire grounds dyed in a soft pink is breathtaking. The autumn foliage is also beautiful, allowing you to feel the changing seasons.
Amulet and Goshuin (Shrine Seal)
Various amulets, talismans, and votive tablets are available at the amulet office. Goshuin (temple/shrine stamps) are popular as souvenirs of visits, and special seasonal goshuin are sometimes distributed.
Annual Events and Festivals
Spring Grand Festival
Held in mid-April, the Spring Grand Festival coincides with the cherry blossom season and is the most spectacular festival. It features Kagura (sacred dance and music) performances, a portable shrine procession, and numerous stalls.
Summer Purification Ceremony
On June 30th, the Summer Purification Ceremony (Nagoshi no Harae) is held. By passing through a ring of reeds, people purify themselves of the impurities accumulated over the past six months and pray for good health and protection from illness for the remaining half of the year.
Autumn Grand Festival
In October, the Autumn Grand Festival is held to pray for a bountiful harvest and the prosperity of the region. It is a lively event involving the entire community, with performances of traditional arts and a procession of children’s portable shrines.
