About Daiganji Temple

Daiganji Temple is a small, historic temple founded in the 13th century. It has a history of being home to monks who repaired Itsukushima Shrine, and has supported the faith of Miyajima since the era of syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism.

The temple grounds house important Buddhist statues and a statue of Benzaiten, and it is a center of Benzaiten worship, attracting many visitors.

Historical Background

Since its founding in the 13th century, Daiganji Temple has maintained a deep connection with Itsukushima Shrine. Even after the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era, it continues to serve as a center of Buddhist faith on Miyajima Island.
