Fushimi Inari Taisha is a Shinto shrine located in Fukakusa Yabunouchi-cho, Fushimi-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. It is a Shikinaisha (Myojin Taisha) and one of the Twenty-Two Shrines (Upper Seven Shrines). Its former rank was Kanpei Taisha, and it is currently an independent shrine.
Its former name was “Inari Shrine.” It changed to its current name in 1946 (see below). The main shrine is located at the foot of Mount Inari, and the entire mountain is considered sacred ground. It is the head shrine of the approximately 30,000 Inari shrines throughout Japan. It attracts the largest number of worshippers among shrines and temples in the Kinki region during the New Year’s pilgrimage (4th in Japan [2010]). The existing former priestly family is the Onishi family.
Although it currently bears the name “Fushimi,” it is located in the Fukakusa district, about 4 kilometers north of Otesuji, the central area of Fushimi. Furthermore, our shrine, which is located almost in the center of Fujimori Shrine’s parish area, has a parish area that extends to the northwest, across the Kamo River, and into Minami Ward and Shimogyo Ward, around Toji Temple and Kyoto Station.
