About Seimei Shrine

Seimei Shrine (Seimei Jinja) is a shrine in Kyoto dedicated to Abe no Seimei (921-1005), an Onmyoji (diviner) of the Heian period. It was founded in 1007 (Kanko 4) by order of Emperor Ichijo on the site of Seimei’s residence. The shrine grounds feature historical sites associated with Seimei, and the shrine building is distinctive for its pentagram (Seimei Kikyo), a symbol of Onmyodo (Japanese esoteric cosmology).

History and Origins

Abe no Seimei was an Onmyoji who was active in the mid-Heian period. He was well-versed in astronomy, calendars, and divination, and served in the Onmyoryo (Bureau of Divination) of the imperial court. He is said to have gained the trust of many nobles and emperors due to his exceptional magical abilities. After Seimei’s death, Seimei Shrine was founded to commemorate his achievements. Initially, it had a vast site, but it fell into disrepair during the Onin War and other conflicts. It was restored after the Meiji Restoration and now stands in its current form.

The Seimei Well, located within the shrine grounds, is said to be a well that Seimei caused to spring forth through his psychic powers. This water is believed to bring good health and protection from illness, and it features a unique mechanism where the top of the well is rotated each spring to face the auspicious direction.

Peach for Warding Off Evil

The bronze peach statue placed in front of the main hall was erected because peaches have long been believed to possess the power to ward off evil and misfortune. It is believed that visitors can ward off their own misfortunes by stroking this peach.
