About Shiba Daijingu Shrine

Shiba Daijingu Shrine, located in Shiba Daimon, Minato-ku, Tokyo, is officially known as “Shiba Shinmei-gu” or “Shiba Shinmei.” Founded in 1005 (Kankō 2), it is a historical shrine beloved by locals as “Kanto’s Ise Shrine.”

It enshrines Amaterasu Ōmikami (Naiku) and Toyouke Ōmikami (Geku), the deities of Ise Grand Shrine, and during the Edo period, it attracted the faith of the common people of Edo as “Shiba Shinmei.” While the current shrine buildings were rebuilt after the war, they still convey over a thousand years of history and tradition.

History and Origins

Founding History

Shiba Daijingu Shrine was founded in 1005 during the reign of Emperor Ichijō. It is believed to have originated when the deities of Ise’s Naiku and Geku were invited to this land, which was then part of Ise Grand Shrine’s territory.

Prosperity in the Edo Period

During the Edo period, widely known as “Shiba Shinmei,” it flourished in Shiba, a temple town for Zojo-ji Temple, and became a center of popular faith. It particularly attracted the reverence of merchants and craftsmen, and thrived as a god of business prosperity.

War Damage and Reconstruction

The shrine buildings were destroyed in the 1945 Tokyo air raids, but were rebuilt after the war and continue to welcome many worshippers today.
