About Nikko Futarasan Shrine Chugushi
Nikko Futarasan Shrine Chugushi is a shrine located on the shores of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. As a sub-shrine of Nikko Futarasan Shrine, it sits on the lakeshore at an altitude of 1,292m and is also known as a starting point for climbing the sacred Mount Nantai.
History and Origin
The founding of Chugushi dates back to 782 (Enryaku 1), when the monk Shodo Shonin, upon reaching the summit of Mount Nantai, erected an inner shrine at the summit and a Chugushi shrine on the mountainside. For over 1200 years since then, it has welcomed many worshippers as a sacred site of mountain worship. The current shrine building was rebuilt during the Edo period, reflecting several hundred years of history.
