What is Shinkyo Bridge?
Shinkyo Bridge is a vermilion-painted wooden bridge spanning the Daiya River in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. As one of the structures of Nikko Futarasan Shrine, it was registered as a component of the World Heritage Site “Shrines and Temples of Nikko” in 1999. Boasting a length of 28 meters, a width of 7.4 meters, and a height of 10.6 meters above the water, its appearance spanning a deep gorge is a representative landscape of Nikko.
History and Legend
The origins of Shinkyo Bridge date back to the Nara period. Legend says that in 767 (Jingo-Keiun 1), when Shodo Shonin, the founder of Nikko, was blocked by the rapids of the Daiya River, Jinja-o appeared and released two snakes, from which mountain sedge grew, forming the bridge. For this reason, it is also called the “Mountain Sedge Snake Bridge” and has been revered as a sacred bridge since ancient times.
During the Edo period, the bridge was a sacred bridge (“Mihashi”) reserved for the Shogun’s pilgrimage to Nikko Shrine and the dispatch of imperial envoys, and was closed to the general public. The current bridge was rebuilt in 1907 (Meiji 40).
