About Tenkawa Daibenzaiten Shrine

Tenkawa Daibenzaiten Shrine (Tenkawa Daibenzaiten-sha) is a Shinto shrine located in Tenkawa Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, and is commonly known as “Tenkawa Shrine.” Nestled in the tranquil embrace of the Omine mountain range, it has long attracted many worshippers as a sacred site for Shugendo (mountain asceticism) and as a shrine dedicated to the god of performing arts.

History and Origin

Founded by En no Gyoja during the Asuka period, it boasts a history of approximately 1300 years. Initially, it developed as a base for Shugendo, and is considered a sacred site where Kobo Daishi Kukai is said to have trained. The main deity is Ichikishima-hime no Mikoto, revered as the goddess of performing arts and wealth, syncretized with Benzaiten.

In the Middle Ages, due to its location along the Kumano pilgrimage route, it attracted many nobles and ascetic monks. From the Edo period onward, it became a place of worship for those involved in performing arts such as Noh and Kabuki, and even today, it is known for being visited by many entertainers, including musicians, actors, and dancers.

Points of Worship

Isuzu (Bell)

The most distinctive feature of Tenkawa Shrine is the “Isuzu,” considered one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan, enshrined in the main hall. This bell has a uniquely clear tone, and worshippers are allowed to ring it. The sound of the Isuzu is believed to ward off evil spirits and purify the heart, and many worshippers are captivated by its sound.

Noh Stage

There is a magnificent Noh stage on the shrine grounds, where performances and dances are held throughout the year. Especially during the annual festival (July 16th and 17th), Noh performers and musicians from all over Japan gather for the performances, creating a truly impressive spectacle.

Misogi-den (Purification Hall)

This is a place for purification rituals using the clear waters of the Amanogawa River. Those who wish to participate can experience the purification ritual under the guidance of a Shinto priest (reservations required). This is a valuable experience that preserves the traditions of Shugendo (mountain asceticism).
