About Tsuyu Tenjin Shrine (Ohatsu Tenjin)
Tsuyu Tenjin Shrine, located in Sonezaki, Kita-ku, Osaka City, is affectionately known as “Ohatsu Tenjin.” While its official name is “Tsuyu Tenjin Shrine,” it became known by the name of the heroine “Ohatsu” after the setting of Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s puppet play “Sonezaki Shinju,” which was based on a real-life double suicide incident during the Edo period.
Despite being in the heart of the bustling Umeda district, this small shrine maintains a tranquil atmosphere and is beloved by locals and tourists alike as a power spot for romantic fulfillment and matchmaking.
The Story of Sonezaki Shinju
A Tragic Ending to Love
In 1703 (Genroku 16), Tokubei, a clerk at a soy sauce shop, and Ohatsu, a courtesan at the Tenmaya, were deeply in love. However, Tokubei was persuaded by his master to marry Ohatsu and even accepted her dowry. Deceived by a friend and robbed of the money, Tokubei and Ohatsu committed suicide together in the “Tenjin no Mori” (Tenjin Forest) of Tsuyu Tenjin Shrine.
Dramatic Adaptation by Chikamatsu Monzaemon
Just one month after this incident, Chikamatsu Monzaemon adapted it into a puppet play, “Sonezaki Shinju” (The Love Suicides at Sonezaki), which premiered at the Osaka Takemoto-za. It became an unprecedented hit, and Tsuyu Tenjin Shrine became widely known as “Ohatsu Tenjin.”
