About Hannya-ji Temple
Hannya-ji Temple is a Shingon Ritsu sect temple located in Hannya-ji-cho, Nara City. It is said to have been founded during the Asuka period by the Goguryeo monk Ekan, and flourished as a temple protecting the northeast (demon’s gate) of Heijo-kyo (the ancient capital). Currently, it is affectionately known as “Cosmos Temple,” and in autumn, approximately 150,000 cosmos flowers adorn the temple grounds.
Highlights of the Temple Grounds
National Treasure: Tower Gate
The tower gate, built during the Kamakura period, is a designated National Treasure. Its well-proportioned and beautiful form is highly regarded as a masterpiece of Kamakura architecture.
Important Cultural Property: Thirteen-Storied Stone Pagoda
This granite pagoda, approximately 14 meters tall, is a representative work of Kamakura period stone art. Buddhist statues are carved into each layer, showcasing delicate craftsmanship.
Stone Buddha Statues
Numerous stone Buddha statues dating from the Heian to Kamakura periods are placed within the temple grounds. Exposed to the elements, these statues retain a serene expression, soothing the hearts of visitors.
Points to Note During Your Visit
Seasonal Flowers
- Spring (Late March to April): Approximately 30,000 Japanese kerria flowers bloom, painting the temple grounds golden.
- Early Summer (June): Hydrangeas and other flowers are in full bloom.
- Autumn (Late September to Early November): Approximately 150,000 cosmos flowers are in full bloom, making it the most spectacular season.
- Winter (December to February): Daffodils bloom with delicate flowers.
Recommended Visiting Time
During the autumn cosmos season, visiting in the morning is recommended. The combination of cosmos flowers and stone Buddha statues illuminated by the morning sun is exceptionally beautiful. Weekdays are relatively quiet, allowing for a leisurely stroll through the temple grounds.
Photo Spot
The combination of the thirteen-story stone pagoda and cosmos flowers makes for an excellent photo opportunity. Photos of the flowers with the main gate in the background are also popular.
Benefits
Wisdom and Academic Success
The principal image, Manjushri Bodhisattva, is worshipped as the Buddha of wisdom and is believed to grant blessings for academic success and passing exams. Many students and those preparing for qualification exams visit the temple.

- From JR Nara Station/Kintetsu Nara Station: Get off at “Hannyaji” bus stop (Nara Kotsu Bus) and it’s right there (approx. 10 minutes)
- Walking from Kintetsu Nara Station: Approx. 30 minutes (You can also enjoy a route via Nara Park)
Access by Car
- Approx. 15 minutes from the Daini Hanna Expressway “Horai IC”
- Parking: Approx. 20 regular cars (free)

Hannya-ji Temple is included in the pilgrimage route within Nara City, and is a temple frequently visited by pilgrims along with Todai-ji Temple and Kofuku-ji Temple. The temple grounds, enveloped in tranquility, are an ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle and find peace of mind.
