About Homan-gu Kamado Shrine

Homan-gu Kamado Shrine is a historic shrine located in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Situated at the foot of Mount Homan, it offers a tranquil atmosphere surrounded by trees for worship.

Founded approximately 1350 years ago, it was established to ward off evil spirits from the northeast direction of the Dazaifu government office. The main deity is Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto, widely worshipped as a god of matchmaking, protection against evil, and warding off misfortune.

In recent years, the shrine’s sophisticated design and the beauty of its surrounding nature throughout the seasons have attracted attention, making it popular among younger generations.

Points to Note During Your Visit

Main Hall and Worship Hall

The main hall stands nestled in the embrace of Mount Homan, creating a solemn atmosphere. The shrine office and gift shop, renovated in 2012, are a beautiful space that blends tradition and modern design, welcoming visitors.

Musubi no Ito (Thread of Connection)

A popular item at Kamado Shrine is the “Musubi no Ito” (Thread of Connection). This amulet, associated with the divine power of Tamayorihime-no-Mikoto for matchmaking, can be worn like a friendship bracelet or tied to something important. Its colorful design makes it particularly popular with younger visitors.

Reunion Tree

Within the shrine grounds is a sacred tree called the “Reunion Tree.” It is said that making a wish in front of this tree will bring about a reunion with a loved one or good fortune in love.

Aikyō no Iwa (Rock of Charm)

The “Aikyō no Iwa” (Rock of Charm) is another popular spot. It is said that if you walk between the two rocks with your eyes closed and reach the rock safely, your love will be fulfilled. Many visitors try this matchmaking fortune-telling method.

Seasonal Highlights

Spring Cherry Blossoms

From late March to early April, cherry blossoms bloom profusely throughout the shrine grounds. The rows of cherry trees along the stone steps are particularly beautiful, giving a strong sense of spring’s arrival.

Autumn Foliage

Kamado Shrine is known as one of Dazaifu’s premier spots for viewing autumn leaves. From mid- to late November, the entire shrine grounds are dyed in red and yellow, with the autumn leaves along the stone steps and approach being especially magnificent. There are also periods when the shrine is illuminated at night, allowing visitors to enjoy a magical atmosphere.

Due to its history as a shrine protecting the northeast direction (the “demon’s gate”) of the Dazaifu government office, it is known for its blessings of protection from evil, warding off misfortune, and ensuring family safety. Many people visit to pray for safety before moving or traveling.
