Hachiman Asami Shrine was founded in Kenkyu 7 (1196). On January 11th of that year, Lord Otomo Yoshinao, who was appointed as the governor of both Buzen and Bungo provinces and as the Chinzei Bugyo (military governor of Kyushu) by the Kamakura Shogunate, came to this area. It is said that on June 11th of the same year, Lord Otomo Yoshinao, who entered Bungo Province from Hamawakiura, Hayami District (present-day Hamawaki, Beppu City), established the Hachiman Asami Shrine by inviting the deity from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura.
