About Shikaumi Shrine

Shikaumi Shrine is an ancient shrine located on Shikanoshima Island in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City, dedicated to the guardian deities of the sea. It enshrines the three Watatsumi deities—Sokotsu-Watatsumi-no-Kami, Nakatsu-Watatsumi-no-Kami, and Uwatsu-Watatsumi-no-Kami—as its principal deities, and has long been revered as the “head shrine of the sea gods.”

History and Origin

It is said to have been founded during the reign of Empress Jingu, boasting a history of over 2000 years. Located on Shikanoshima Island, a crucial point for maritime traffic since ancient times, it has received fervent devotion from the imperial court and samurai families as a god of safe voyages and protection at sea. Within the shrine grounds is a Korean bell (cast in 1279 during the Goryeo Dynasty), a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, known as one of the finest examples of Korean bells still existing in Japan.

Points to Note During Your Visit

Main Shrine and Worship Hall

The main shrine is a magnificent three-bay nagare-zukuri style building, built facing the sea. At the worship hall, you can pray to the three Watatsumi deities for safe voyages, safety at sea, and abundant catches. When visiting, offer your prayers with gratitude to the sea gods.

Korean Bell (Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property)

The Korean bell, housed in the bell tower on the shrine grounds, is a valuable cultural property cast in 1279 during the Goryeo period. Made of bronze, it measures approximately 1.5 meters in height and 0.9 meters in diameter, and is inscribed with intricate patterns and inscriptions. While there are various theories about how it came to be donated to Shikaumi Shrine, it is an important legacy that tells the history of exchange between Japan and the Korean Peninsula.

Deer Statues and Divine Messengers

There are several deer statues on the shrine grounds. Deer are considered the divine messengers of Shikaumi Shrine. Deer have long inhabited Shikanoshima Island and have been cherished as sacred animals. ## Annual Festivals

Shikaumi Shrine is known for holding a variety of festivals throughout the year.

Hoshasai (Archery Festival)

A New Year’s festival held on January 15th. Participants shoot arrows at targets to predict the year’s fortune and pray for a bountiful harvest and safety at sea.

Yamahomesai (Mountain Praise Festival)

The most important festival, held in October. A grand procession of portable shrines and offerings are held, attracting many worshippers.
