About Atago Shrine

Atago Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Atago 1-chome, Minato-ku, Tokyo. Situated on the summit of Mount Atago, which is 26 meters above sea level, it was known as a scenic spot offering panoramic views of Edo (present-day Tokyo) during the Edo period.

It was founded in 1603 (Keicho 8) by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who established the Edo Shogunate. It is a historical shrine that was established by inviting the deity from Atago Shrine in Kyoto and has been revered as the guardian deity of fire prevention and disaster relief in Edo.

Deities and Benefits

The main deity is Homusubi-no-Mikoto, known as the god of fire. Enshrined alongside him are Mizuhanome-no-Mikoto, Oyamatsumi-no-Mikoto, Yamato Takeru-no-Mikoto, Shogun Jizo, and Fugen Daibosatsu.

Main Benefits:

  • Fire prevention and protection from fire
  • Business prosperity
  • Career advancement and good fortune
  • Matchmaking
  • Protection for those in the printing and computer industries

The benefit of fire prevention has been particularly famous since the Edo period, and even today, restaurant owners and firefighters continue to visit the shrine. Also, due to the legend of the “Stairs of Success,” many business people also visit the shrine.

The Legend of the Stairs of Success

The most famous feature of Atago Shrine is the steep stone staircase on the main approach. These 86 steps are called the “Stairs of Success” or “Men’s Slope,” and the incline reaches approximately 40 degrees.

The Story of Magaki Heikuro

In 1634, when the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, visited Mount Atago, he ordered his retainers, “Is there anyone who can bring me the plum blossoms blooming on the mountaintop on horseback?” While everyone hesitated at the sight of the steep stone steps, Heikuro Magaki, a retainer of the Marugame Domain in Sanuki Province, skillfully rode his horse up the steps, presented a plum branch, and galloped down.

It is said that this feat made Heikuro famous as “Japan’s greatest horseman” and led to his subsequent rise in rank. This story is the origin of the name “Stairs of Success.”

Points for Visiting

How to Climb the Steps

Because the Stairs of Success are steep, it is important to hold on tightly to the handrail and take each step carefully. Particular caution is needed during rainy weather and in winter, as the steps can be slippery. Those who are not confident in their physical strength or have concerns about their legs and back can use the gentler “Women’s Slope” (accessible via elevator) behind the shrine.

Tips for Climbing:

  • Wear comfortable shoes (avoid heels)
  • Utilize the handrails
  • Climb at your own pace without overexerting yourself
  • Be especially careful when descending
