About Ryoan-ji Temple
Ryoan-ji Temple is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple of the Myoshin-ji school located in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto City. It was founded in 1450 (Hotoku 2) by Hosokawa Katsumoto, a shogunal deputy of the Muromachi shogunate. It is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto,” and its Hojo Garden (rock garden) is particularly renowned worldwide as a masterpiece visualizing Zen philosophy.
The Charm of the Rock Garden
This dry landscape garden measures 25 meters wide and 10 meters deep, with 15 stones of varying sizes arranged in a white sand garden. Its unique design ensures that no matter where you view it from, one stone is always hidden from view by the others, earning it the nickname “Tiger Cub Crossing Garden.” The ripples in the white sand are said to represent flowing water, and the stones symbolize islands and mountains, but the interpretation is left to the viewer.
Highlights of the Temple Grounds
Hojo (Main Hall)
This building overlooks the rock garden, and the sliding screen paintings and ceiling paintings are also impressive. You can sit on the veranda and leisurely admire the garden.
Kyoyo Pond
A pond in the strolling garden that spreads out on the south side of the temple grounds. The scenery of the four seasons is reflected on the water’s surface, allowing you to enjoy a natural beauty that contrasts with the rock garden.
Tsukubai (Water Basin)
A famous water basin inscribed with the words “I only know contentment.” The square hole in the center is likened to the character “口” (mouth), expressing the teachings of Zen.
