It is said to have been founded by Gyōki Bodhisattva at the behest of Emperor Shōmu during the Nara period, boasting a history of nearly 1300 years. The principal image is Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), and the temple has long been revered as a place of miraculous healing.
