About Kozu-gu Shrine

Kozu-gu Shrine is an ancient shrine located in Kozu, Chuo-ku, Osaka City, dedicated to Emperor Nintoku, the 16th emperor of Japan. Its name originates from Emperor Nintoku’s former capital, Naniwa Kozu Palace, and it was founded in its current location in 866 (Jogan 8) by imperial decree of Emperor Seiwa.

History of Kozu-gu Shrine

From Founding to the Edo Period

Emperor Nintoku is known as a benevolent emperor, famous for the anecdote of “the people’s hearths.” Kozu-gu Shrine was initially built on the site believed to be Emperor Nintoku’s palace, but it fell into disrepair due to war during the medieval period. Following Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s construction of Osaka Castle, it was relocated to the grounds of Himekoso Shrine in 1583 (Tensho 11). Later, in 1623 (Genna 9), it was moved again to its current location, where it has been revered ever since.

Development since the Modern Era

During the Meiji era, it was designated a prefectural shrine. After being destroyed by fire during the war, the shrine building was rebuilt in 1961 (Showa 36). Even today, it is affectionately known as “Takatsu-san” by the citizens of Osaka, and many worshippers visit throughout the year for events such as New Year’s prayers and Shichi-Go-San (a traditional rite of passage for children).
