About Ikasuri Shrine

Ikasuri Shrine is a historic shrine located in Chuo-ku, Osaka City. Revered since ancient times as a guardian deity of Osaka, it is affectionately known locally as “Zama-san” or “Zama-jinja.” Despite being surrounded by urban buildings, the shrine grounds maintain a tranquil atmosphere, offering visitors a peaceful respite.

Highlights of the Shrine Grounds

Hydrangea Spot
In summer, hydrangeas bloom profusely on the shrine grounds, creating an oasis in the city that captivates visitors. From June to July, the sight of blue, purple, and pink flowers adorning the grounds is magnificent.

Komainu (Guardian Dogs)
Magnificent guardian dogs stand on the shrine grounds, protecting the shrine. Their dignified appearance, imbued with a sense of history, is a symbolic presence welcoming visitors.

Benefits and Deities

Ikusuri Shrine is known as the god of protection of homes, safe travel, and safe childbirth. The main deities are Ikui-no-kami, Sakui-no-kami, Tsunagai-no-kami, Hahiki-no-kami, and Asuha-no-kami, collectively known as “Ikusuri-no-kami.”

Points to Note When Visiting

Visiting Hours

The shrine grounds are generally open all day, but the shrine office is usually open from 9:00 to 17:00. Those wishing to receive a Goshuin (temple/shrine stamp) or amulet are advised to visit during these hours.

Proper Worship Etiquette

  1. Bow before passing through the torii gate
  2. Purify your body and mind at the water basin
  3. Bow twice, clap twice, and bow once in front of the main hall
  4. Quietly recite your wish in your heart

Recommended Time to Visit

  • June-July: Hydrangeas are in full bloom, making the shrine grounds the most vibrant.
  • Weekday Mornings: You can worship quietly and at your own pace.
  • First Three Days of the New Year: It will be crowded with New Year’s visitors, but you can enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of the new year.

Access by Train

  • Approximately 3 minutes on foot from Osaka Metro Honmachi Station (nearest station)
  • Approximately 5 minutes on foot from Osaka Metro Sakaisuji-Honmachi Station
  • Approximately 10 minutes on foot from Osaka Metro Yodoyabashi Station

From Honmachi Station, you can use the Midosuji Line, Chuo Line, and Yotsubashi Line, making access very convenient.

Parking

Since dedicated parking is limited, we recommend using public transportation. There are coin-operated parking lots nearby, but they can be crowded on weekdays due to the business district.
