About Namba Yasaka Shrine
Namba Yasaka Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Motomachi, Naniwa Ward, Osaka City. While the exact date of its founding is unknown, it has long been revered as the tutelary deity of the Namba area. The massive Shishiden (lion hall) towering within the shrine grounds, measuring 12 meters in height and 10 meters in depth, is a popular photo spot for both domestic and international tourists due to its impressive presence.
Deities and History
The main deity is Susanoo-no-Mikoto, with Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto and Yahashira-no-Mikoto enshrined alongside. According to shrine tradition, it already existed as “Namba Shimo-no-Miya” during the Enkyu era (1069-1074) of Emperor Go-Sanjo’s reign, and flourished as a Gion Shrine dedicated to Gozu Tenno until the Meiji Restoration.
The Famous Lion Hall
Overwhelming Presence
Completed in 1974, the Lion Hall is shaped like a giant lion’s head integrated with a stage. Its eyes are 2.2 meters in diameter, and the inside of its mouth serves as a stage where various Shinto rituals and dedication ceremonies are held. Because lions are believed to devour evil spirits, it is revered as a symbol of “victory” and “protection against evil.”
Best Photo Spot
The most impressive composition is looking up from the front, and photos with a blue sky in the background are popular. Morning sunlight is ideal for photography, allowing you to capture the details of the lion’s eyes and fangs clearly. It’s a popular spot for social media photos, especially among foreign tourists.
