About Sanko Shrine

Sanko Shrine is a Shinto shrine located on Sanadayama Hill in Tamatsukuri Honmachi, Tennoji Ward, Osaka City. It enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, and Susanoo-no-Mikoto, known as gods of protection against stroke, and is affectionately known locally as “Saishoyama no Tenno-san.”

Although the shrine grounds are small, it is a popular spot for history buffs as a historical site associated with Sanada Yukimura (Nobushige), a hero of the Sengoku period.

Deep Connection to Sanada Yukimura

Legend of the Escape Tunnel of the Siege of Osaka

The main highlight of the shrine grounds is the entrance to an underground passage known as the Sanada Escape Tunnel. Legend remains that during the Winter Siege of Osaka in 1614, Sanada Yukimura dug a secret escape tunnel leading to Osaka Castle.

Currently, this cave is off-limits for safety reasons, but you can see its entrance from behind the fence and reflect on the battle that took place over 400 years ago. While it’s believed that it didn’t actually connect to the castle, it’s certain that this area, near the site of Sanada Maru’s outpost, was an important base for Yukimura.

A Magnificent Statue of Sanada Yukimura

Within the temple grounds stands a bronze statue of Sanada Yukimura in full armor. His valiant figure, clad in red armor and helmet, and wielding a spear, is a popular photo spot. Many visitors enjoy taking commemorative photos in front of the statue.
