About Toyokuni Shrine

Toyokuni Shrine is a shrine located within Osaka Castle Park, dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Many worshippers visit the shrine seeking success and good fortune in business, inspired by Hideyoshi’s rise from a farmer to a powerful ruler.

History and Origin

Toyokuni Shrine was founded in 1879 (Meiji 12). Originally, a shrine dedicated to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, “Toyokuni Daimyojin,” was built in Kyoto in 1599 (Keicho 4), but it was abolished by the Tokugawa shogunate after the Siege of Osaka. After the Meiji Restoration, Hideyoshi’s achievements were re-evaluated, and the current Toyokuni Shrine was newly built within Osaka Castle.

The current shrine building was rebuilt in 1961 (Showa 36), and the grounds enshrine Hideyoshi, Toyotomi Hideyori, and Toyotomi Hidenaga.
